Clinical medicine is not about how much you know. Instead, it is about
1. Methodically applying what you ko know;
2. Recognizing when you do not know; and
3. Knowing how to find the knowledge you need.
Recognize that human interactions are complex. Expect complexity.
Tacit knowledge may limit the ability of your superiors to teach you. Tacit knowledge means knowing how to perform a task but not remembering how you learned it. Once a skill has become tacit, it is difficult to teach it to students. This is why experts in a topic can be the worst teachers and why some of your best attendings may find it hard to explain to you how they do the great things they do. This book provides insight into what has made your great role models great.
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit.
Medicine requires teamwork. Each team member has a role. Roles are ultimately established by the team.
